Kystriksveien – The Coastal Route

Reisen This travel route starts near Norway’s third largest city, Trondheim. Drive north from the airport on the E6 highway. The drive to Steinkjer will take you through Innherred, which has a beautiful cultural landscape, and along the shores of Norway’s second longest fjord, the Trondheimsfjord.

We recommend a detour along The Golden Route, which is a scenic route from Røra (E6) to Vist (E6). Driving this way will allow you to experience a beautiful cultural landscape. You will find a wide variety of farm shops and art galleries selling everything from cheese to ceramics. When you reach Steinkjer, drive 4 km north then turn onto the Coastal Route (route 17), which will take you to Namsos. You are welcome to stop at the Kystriksveien Information Centre in downtown Steinkjer.

Namsos is situated at the mouth of the noted salmon fishing river Namsen. We recommend a trip to the top of the town mountain Klompen for great views of the river, town and fjord. You can drive all the way to the summit. Stay overnight in Namsos at either Scandic Rock City Hotel or Namsos Camping.

Namsos - Brønnøysund

You have two options: you can drive along the coast from Namsos on route 769 or inland on route 17. The first option is probably the nicest experience even though it involves an extra ferry crossing. Take route 769 from downtown Namsos to Lund and then catch the ferry to Hofles. This scenic road winds its way along fjords, including Folla. Stay on route 769 to Rørvik, which you will reach in time for lunch. Visit Norveg – the Centre of Coastal Culture and Industry located in the centre of this coastal town. As well as being an interesting museum that traces the major milestones throughout the 10,000-year history of the coast, it has a good restaurant/café for lunch.

The travel time from Namsos to Rørvik, including the ferry crossing, is approx. 1 hr 40 min. From Rørvik, drive on routes 770 and 771 until you reach route 17 in Bindal. You will then come to Holm, where you take the ferry across to Vennesund. You will notice that the landscape is more open and the mountains are higher. You have now arrived on the Helgeland Coast. After the short ferry crossing, it’s only 14 km to Brønnøysund. This coastal town in the middle of Norway is known for the famous landmark Torghatten – the mountain with the hole through it.
Torghatten is situated 14 km from downtown Brønnøysund. Park at the car park, climb up the mountain and walk through the hole. This is a wonderful evening walk, which offers fantastic panoramic views.
Stay two nights in Brønnøysund. Choose between Thon Hotel Brønnøysund, which is a full-service hotel, and Corner Motel. The combined travel time from Namsos to Brønnøysund is approx. 5 hours.

Brønnøysund - Vega - Brønnøysund

The Vega Islands, which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, are situated just a short ferry trip north-west of Brønnøysund. On arrival, you can visit the local eider museum (E-Museum) and learn about the islanders’ use of down from the eider ducks. On Tuesdays and Fridays during the summer seas
